Satnam

Satnam is a Punjabi and Sanskrit word that can be translated as “true style” or “God’s Signature is Truth.” It is a mixture of the words “real name” and “true identity.” It is a blend of two terms: sat, which means “truth,” “honesty,” or the “reality of life,” and name, which means “name” or “identity,” especially in connection to the Divine.

Satnam is accepted as a mantra or as component of a mantra in Sikhism, and it is pronounced “sat-am.” In Sikhism, the word Satnam is contained in the mul mantar, which can be found throughout the Sikh sacred scripture “Guru Granth Sahib” and is recited by followers this religion daily. Salman is a Sanskrit term that means “truth by name.”

The most commonly used mantra in Kundalini yoga is Satnam. Satnam is the first of the five basic mantras. It is believed that chanting it during yoga practice can awaken the soul and help the practitioner develop a deeper, personal connection with the concept of Satnam. This mantra is used to call upon the Divine truth within during meditation and kriyas, and it is recited during these practices.

However, Satnam is also used more widely in Kundalini yoga than in other yoga forms. Like namaste in different kinds of yoga, Satnam is used as a closing salute at the end of class and as a general greeting in Satnam yoga. In this case, the word Satnam refers to recognizing the true essence of the Divine within the individual who is being addressed.
